Grumman F-14A Tomcat · VF-84 “Jolly Rogers”
US Navy · the skull-and-crossbones tail
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat was the US Navy’s carrier-borne, variable-sweep-wing interceptor — a two-seat fighter built around the long-reach AIM-54 Phoenix missile and the muscle to defend a carrier battle group far out to sea. VF-84, the “Jolly Rogers,” carried one of naval aviation’s most recognizable markings: the white skull and crossbones on a gloss-black tail, an emblem the squadron wore with pride through the Tomcat era.
